Technically, it's calculated as a ratio: Contrast Ratio = Brightest White Luminance ÷ Darkest Black Luminance . So if a projector can hit 3,000 lumens of white and 0.3 lumens of black, its contrast ratio is 3,000 ÷ 0.3 = 10,000:1. That means the white is 10,000 times brighter than the black.
Why does this matter? Think of contrast ratio as the "depth" of an image. A low contrast ratio makes everything look flat—whites are dim, blacks are grayish, and details get lost. A high contrast ratio? It's like turning up the "pop" on your screen.
