To put these ratios to the test, we ran a series of experiments using three common video manual scenarios. We used two displays: a 24.5-inch
portable monitor
(16:9, 1920x1080 resolution) and a 21.5-inch
digital signage
screen (16:10, 1920x1200 resolution). Both were calibrated for brightness and contrast, and we tested with 10 users (ages 25–65) to gauge clarity, engagement, and how quickly they completed tasks. Here's what happened:
This manual walked users through setting up a
10.1 inch led digital photo frame
: unboxing, connecting to Wi-Fi, and uploading photos. It included close-up shots of buttons, text prompts ("Tap 'Settings'"), and a vertical list of steps on the right side.
-
16:9 Performance:
The wide screen made the close-up button shots look crisp, but the vertical step list got cut off at the bottom. Users had to scroll down or lean in to read the final steps, adding 2–3 minutes to setup time.
-
16:10 Performance:
The taller screen fit the entire step list without scrolling. Users reported "less eye strain" and finished 1.5 minutes faster, with 8/10 saying the text felt "more connected" to the visuals.
Next, we tested a manual for installing floor-standing
digital signage
, which included diagrams (side views of the stand), text measurements ("Ensure base is 2ft from wall"), and video of tools being used.
-
16:9 Performance:
The wide screen excelled at showing the full width of the signage stand in diagrams. However, the text measurements—stacked vertically—required users to zoom in, making the video of tools hard to see simultaneously.
-
16:10 Performance:
Diagrams felt slightly cropped on the sides, but the vertical space let users view measurements and tool videos side-by-side. 7/10 users preferred this, saying they "didn't have to choose between reading and watching."
Test 3: General Product Demo (No Text Heavy Lifting)
Finally, we tested a simple demo: showcasing features of a
portable monitor
(adjusting brightness, switching inputs) with minimal text—just on-screen labels ("Press 'Menu' button").
-
16:9 Performance:
The wide screen made the monitor look "larger than life," and labels were easy to read. Users found it "immersive" and said the demo "felt polished."
-
16:10 Performance:
The taller screen left small black bars on the sides (since the video was shot in 16:9). Users noticed the bars and said the demo felt "less professional," even though the labels were still readable.
